Teeth Whitening Q & A

What Cause a Tooth to Become Discolored?

A person’s teeth become yellowed or discolored for numerous reasons. Eating and drinking foods and beverages such as berries, coffee, and tea can stain teeth and smoking or using tobacco can cause teeth to yellow. These surface stains can usually be removed through whitening treatments. However, in some cases the staining may be internal or caused by a trauma to the tooth. These situations will require deep internal bleaching or the application of a crown or veneer. Taking medications for a prolonged time and undergoing a root canal procedure can also cause a tooth to become discolored.

Is Teeth Whitening and Bleaching Safe?

The treatment used at a dentist’s office for bleaching or whitening teeth will be safe. The office only uses proven, advanced teeth whitening procedure to guarantee the patient obtains the results they desire without any adverse side effects. There may be some tooth sensitivity after the whitening procedure however this will go away quickly and the sensitivity experienced should be minimal. Achieving a white, beautiful smile will be a safe procedure which allows patients to feel more confident and proud of their smiles.

What is Zoom Whitening?

Before the first treatment, the patient will have his or her teeth assessed for damage or decay by the dentist. Any areas found will be cleaned and treated first. When the whitening begins, a state-of-the-art, light activated gel made with hydrogen peroxide will be applied to the teeth. To begin, the patient’s lips will be held back with a retainer to ensure that each tooth is covered with the same amount of gel and exposed to the same amount of light. The gel is applied and the light focused on it for about 15 minutes. Once the time is up, the gel will be removed along with the lip retainer. Right away patients will be able to see whiter, brighter teeth.
