Invisalign Q & A

Invisalign ChelseaWhat is Invisalign®?

Invisalign® is a cosmetic dental system which is designed to help correct alignment and crowding issues gradually over time. The procedure does not use metal wires like traditional braces but instead uses custom-made plastic aligners which are designed to slowly shift a person’s teeth into place without being seen. The aligners are made to fit a person’s teeth using impressions and x-rays and are fabricated in a special lab at the time of order.

How Do the Invisalign® Aligners Work?

The requirements of each patient will be unique, however the course of treatment will be laid especially for the person by the dentist and usually follows a similar course. The dentist will take x-rays and pictures of the person’s teeth and using these images and a depiction of the end result the aligners will be made for that patient’s exact needs. The aligners themselves are made from BPA-free plastic and are known for being very comfortable. They should be worn for 2 to 22 hours each day. They can be removed for drinking and eating in addition to brushing and flossing. The aligners will be changed every two weeks and the entire process takes approximately one year for most adults. If the patient has serious alignment or crowding issue it may take longer.

Why Should a Person Choose Invisalign®?

Using the Invisalign® aligners can have many advantages for patients. Metal braces cannot be removed and they often cause sores to develop where they rub against the inside of a person’s lips. Since the aligners are made from smooth plastic they do not cut into a person’s cheeks or gums and they can be removed to ensure good oral hygiene is continued throughout the aligning process. Invisalign® aligners are also clear which allows patients to feel more confident throughout the straightening period.
